I dunno... the girl sold books... maybe she isn't Shakespeare or Hemingway... but her story was one people wanted to read, and that's saying something.
I've never read Meyer so I can't comment on her writing. But I've read so many reviews and comments that all say the same basic thing. The writing isn't great, but the stories are.
Look, what is it with people piling on this woman's writing? I'm no expert, but I've read a lot and write and I've read all her books (at the insistence of my teen daughter and complied to make her happy) and I see nothing really terrible about her writing. In fact, I found it pretty darn good most of the time. And if you want to make comparisons between her and King, I think she's a lot more polished at this point in her career than King was at a comparable time in his early career. I think all this sniping has more to do with her resounding success and financial windfall. It's called jealousy. Plain. And. Simple.
I've read everything Stephanie Meyer has published so far (at least twice), and I'm also a fan of Steven King and read most of his books and seen pretty much all of his book based movies.
I don't think you can really compare the flavors.
Steven King is versatile and writes very semi-prophetic and mind chilling stories.
Stephanie Meyer writes with a lot of sensuality. Her build-ups to her romantic interactions grip you so much, well let's just say, her writing can be very erotically moving without ever presenting direct erotic content. She lets your mind fill in the 'hot spots.' The sensuality covers the scents around, the visuals, the sounds, the sense of touch, the sense of taste. And I think, most astoundingly, you end up falling in love with the most unlikely of characters, characters that would otherwise normally be deemed by any other story as undesirable, villainous or plain seen as the enemy. Her Protaganist show a lot of heart, compassion and self sacrificing. My wife and I can hardly wait for more.

ReplyDeleteI’m sure her book sales have helped soften the blow of any harsh criticism:
ReplyDelete28 million copies x I wonder what kind of contract she got . . .
Cha-ching!
